A region of Liptov – spreading from the Kriváň Mt. to the Small Fatra mountain range - is one of the most beautiful corners in Slovakia. Ideal geographical conditions and unique beauty of the countryside, concentrated within the not large area, are the reason. Due to natural beauties, adrenaline experiences, thermal springs, folk dance, folk traditions as well as caves, architecture and history, the Liptov is the number one Slovak tourist destination throughout the year.
Liptov is surrounded by the highest mountains in Slovakia: High Tatras, West Tatras and Choč´s Mountains in the north, Low Tatras in the south, Great Fatra in the west and the Poprad basin in the south. The longest Slovak river is flowing through Liptov, the river Váh (43.5 km) and the river Belá, its tributary. The largest water reservoir in Slovakia – Liptovská Mara - is situated in the area. Three caves open to public will reveal the underground secret – Demänovská Ice Cave and Demänovská Cave of Liberty found Demänovská Valley, and Stanišovská Cave found in Liptovský Ján.
Many possibilities are waiting for visitors, preferring active living full of sports, hiking and adrenaline. They can make a selection from rafting, climbing, rope and bob trails, paragliding, sightseeing flights, bike parks, mountain scooters as well as ski, snowboard and free ride trails in winter.
The uniqueness of Liptov also consists in hot thermal springs in aqua parks, offering relaxation after the previous sports activities. There is a great combination of water slides, water attractions, relaxing procedures in sauna worlds and wellness centres with a splendid view of the Slovak mountain peaks.
A visitor interested in history comes into his own if visiting culture relics such as a castle in Likavka, Liptov´s old castle, a castle in Liptovský Hrádok, Celtic settlement Havránok beyond the Liptovská Mara water reservoir as well as a Vlkolínec village, which for its typical folk architecture is protected by UNESCO. It´s worth to mention other historical places to be visited: The Museum of Liptov village in Pribylina, a wooden articular church in Svätý (St.) Kríž, the Museum of Juraj Jánošík, the House of Photography and the Liptov Museum with the Shepherd´s Museum, which is unique within Europe.
The traditions are followed by many events organized throughout the year like folklore festivals, concerts, sports and adrenaline events. Liptov is also well-known for its gastronomic specialities and it´s worth to taste in typical shepherd´s huts as well as in modern restaurants.
